The concept or theme for the portfolio is to show the different colours of nature through the natural yearly cycle with particular focus on the seasons of spring and autumn when the colours become particularly vibrant.
This was a particularly difficult project for me as I usually have great difficulty photographing flowers effectively. I will also openly admit that I have little or no interest in horticulture apart from the end result and that I can only name a few of the common type of flowers. Accepting that this would be a problem, I decided to look for colours rather than types e.g. yellow, blue, red, pink, brown, white and for subjects that were either typical of a season e.g. bluebells or which provided good colour contrast.
I arranged a day trip for the class to visit Sheffield Park Garden in Sussex which from experience, I knew would provide a good source of Autumn and nature pictures in general. The only other site that I decided to pick specifically is Priory Park in Reigate, as I knew from the previous year that there would be masses of Bluebells in the spring. For the remainder of the pictures, I decided that I would keep my eyes peeled for suitable subjects when I went out at weekends. All the final outdoor pictures were shot at Sheffield Park, Arundel Castle, Battle Abbey & Priory Park while the still life images were photographed in the college studio. The images were all taken between October 97 and May 98.
The pictures are displayed on the following images in the same format and organisation as they were submited to the City & Guilds examination board. The images have been kept small to reduce download time and make the pages faster to load. If you uses Explorer4 or Navigator4, you wll get a Dynamic HTML version of the pages which are a bit slicker. Please click on the graphic below to see the portfolio.
